Verizon Adds On New DSL Fees

The telecommunications company Verizon announced yesterday that it would be tacking on a new surcharge for customers using Verizon's ala carte DSL service. The new fee comes just as Verizon stops paying into the Universal Service Fund (USF), which would have saved its subscribers $1 to $3 a month on average.

Verizon had successfully petitioned the FCC for relief from paying the USF, which was ostensibly designed to fund telecommunications initiatives for in low-income and rural areas. The monthly USF fee for consumers ran from $1.25 to $2.83 a month, depending on their type of DSL service.

The new charge, shockingly enough, almost exactly mirrors the old USF fee, ranging from $1.20 to $2.70 a month. Verizon claimed the new fee was due to costs incurred from the development of standalone DSL service, as opposed to service bundled to Verizon's phone offerings or other services. Naturally, most consumers are skeptical.

Dell Product Recall

Dell is recalling 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they could erupt in flames, the company said Monday. It will be the largest safety recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Dell, the world's largest PC maker, said the lithium-ion batteries were made by Sony and were installed in notebooks sold between April 2004 and July 18 of this year

Dell has reported to the safety agency that it documented six instances since December in which notebooks overheated or caught fire. None of the incidents caused injuries or death. Dell said the problems were a result of a manufacturing defect in batteries made by Sony. The safety agency said the batteries were not unique to Dell, meaning that other companies using Sony batteries might also have to issue recalls. Sony has sold its batteries to most of the major computer makers.

The recall raises broader questions about lithium-ion batteries, which are used in devices such as cell phones, portable power tools, camcorders, digital cameras and MP3 players. The potential for such batteries to catch fire has been acknowledged for years and has prompted more limited recalls in the past. But recent fires involving notebook computers, some aboard planes, have brought renewed scrutiny.

Updated Flying Information

The government's ban on liquids and gels in airliner passenger cabins is confusing travelers. Further complicating matters is a carry-on ban on some trans-Atlantic flights.

The restrictions are part of tighter airline security ordered by U.S. and British governments in the wake of a foiled terror plot involving liquid explosives.

The new policies aren't always clear or consistent.

For example, carry-on baggage - including most purses and laptop computers - is banned on all flights from Britain and on some flights from the U.S. to Britain. British Airways bans carry-on baggage from the U.S. to the U.K., but U.S. airlines do not.

British authorities require passengers to taste baby formula or milk at checkpoints, but U.S. officials only want to look at it.

It is unclear whether some items, such as liquid eyeliner, are considered to be a liquid or gel. The Transportation Security Administration advises travelers to check such items.

Laptops, iPods and cell phones are banned from the passenger cabin on all flights to the U.S. from Britain and on British Airways flights from the U.S. to the U.K. Travelers can carry a crossword puzzle that fits into a pocket, plus a pencil or pen. But newspapers will not be allowed, Lampl said.

To help security officials move people through security as quickly as possible, TSA chief Kip Hawley offers some simple advice:

"Declutter your bag."

Since announcing what's allowed in passenger cabins, the TSA has clarified some of its policies.

Liquids or gels not allowed in passenger cabins:

* Beverages
* Shampoo
* Suntan lotion
* Creams
* Toothpaste
* Hair gel

The TSA permits:

* Baby formula, which must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint
* Prescription medicines that match the passenger's name
* Essential nonprescription medicines, such as insulin
* Electronic items such as laptops, CD players and iPods, except on British Airways flights to Britain.

British Airways PLC, the largest carrier between Britain and the United States, offers these guidelines for carry-on items.

Allowed in the cabins:

* Pocket-size wallets and pocket-size purses, such as money, credit cards and identity cards
* Travel documents essential for the journey such as passports and tickets
* Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (for example, a diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic
* Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
* Contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
* Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed, including tampons, pads, towels and wipes
* Unboxed tissues and handkerchiefs
* Keys, but no electrical key fobs.

For those carrying an infant on a British Airways flight only, the following are allowed:

* Baby food and milk, but the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger
* Sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, such as diapers, wipes, creams and diaper disposal bags.

Not allowed on British Airways flights:

* Handbags
* Cosmetics, including lipstick
* All electronic items
* Newspapers (British Airways has them on board for passengers)

Ford Recalls Trucks and SUV

Ford Motor Co. recalled 1.2 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans Thursday amid concerns about potential engine fires. Ford said the recall was tied to the speed control deactivation switch system, which could corrode over time, overheat and ignite. It builds upon one of the largest recalls in U.S. history.

In September 2005, Ford recalled 3.8 million pickups and SUVs from the 1994-2002 model years, including the top-selling F-150 pickup, because of the concerns over engine fires. It was the fifth-largest auto industry recall in U.S. history. In January 2005, the company recalled nearly 800,000 pickups and SUVs from the 2000 model year because of similar issues.

Owners of the newly recalled vehicles will receive notices in the mail in a week, and dealers will install a fused wiring harness. Customers can call Ford at 1-888-222-2751.

Advertising Causes Conflict

U.S. researchers say that the ads published in Cosmopolitan and Essence magazines send two different health messages: be really skinny or eat cake.

Linda Godbold Kean and Laura Prividera, both East Carolina University communication professors, did a content analysis of Essence, a publication that targets a black female audience, and Cosmopolitan, a general audience publication -- but according to the magazine's readership profiles except for race, the demographics of each audience were similar.

Prividera and Kean analyzed 365 advertisements that focused on food and consumption products from both magazines. They found that the three most advertised products in Essence were individual food items at 40 percent, non-alcoholic beverages at 27 percent and fast food 13 percent. In Cosmopolitan, alcoholic beverages appeared in ads 28 percent of the time, individual food items at 27 percent and weight loss products 26 percent, according to the study scheduled to be published in the journal Health Communication.

While 13 percent of Essence's advertisements were for fast food, only 1 percent of the ads in Cosmopolitan were for fast food. Alcoholic beverages made up 11 percent of the consumption items in Essence as compared to 28 percent in Cosmopolitan. Conversely, 12 percent of Cosmopolitan's ads were for non-alcoholic beverages, such as soda. In Essence this number was 27 percent.
